- MIRNEWS.177 1 JULY 1993
-
- SOYUZ-TM17 launched from Baykonur:
-
- On 1 July 1993 at 1433UTC the transportship S-TM17 was laun-
- ched for a flight of 2 days to the MIR Space station. The
- first crew had been chosen and so S-TM17 was manned by Tsibli-
- yev, Serebrov and the Frenchman Haignere. The French women
- cosmonaut Claudie Andre-Deshays will have to wait until 1996
- for her flight on board the MIR station to conduct experiments
- of the French program Cassiopea.
- 3 Hours after launch S-TM17 came in our range (orbit 3, 1734-
- UTC) and strong signals of the 5 transmitters could be monito-
- red (922.755, 165.873, 166.130, 166.140 and 121.750 mc).
- Tsibliyev reported that all was normal and that health and
- mood of the crew were excellent. They already had taken off
- their spacesuits and had just entered the 'life-compartment'.
- At 1656UTC they had reorientated their ship. This crew uses
- the call 'Ceres', so respectively Ceres-1, Ceres-2 and Ceres-
- 3. So Haignere is 'Ceres-3'. During his return flight on 22
- July 1993 he will be a member of Manakov's crew, the Vulkans,
- and then Haignere will use the call 'Vulkan-3'.
- During the pass in orbit 4, 1903UTC, Tsibliyev reported all
- details about the 2de orbitcorrection, which was executed
- during that pass. All went as scheduled. This had been also
- the case with the 1st orbitcorrection. Tsibliyev reported
- details about this correction as well for during that correc-
- tion S-TM17 was out of range of trackingstations.
- Among the reported data were the times (in seconds) during
- which the S.K.D. (engines) worked, the gained speed in M/sec,
- the so called SIRT (fuel consumption in KG) and some pressures
- in tanks. During the pass in orb. 5 (2036UTC) again radiotraf-
- fic loud and clear. During the next pass the cosmonauts slept.
- At 221345UTC Soyuz-T17 could be seen passing the TCA as a
- clear star in elevation 39 degrees.
- On 2 July 1993 S-TM17 will be flying autonomously. She will
- pass at abt. 30 minutes after MIR.
- Towards midnight S-TM17 as well as MIR can be observed visual-
- ly if weather conditions are good.
- Docking can be expected on 3 July 1993 between 1615 and 1620U-
- TC, so not long after the first pass of both objects.
- If the Russians will stick to previous plans the freighter
- Progress-M17 will undock under observation of t
- he approaching
- S-TM17. S-TM17 will dock to the dockingport from where Pr-M17
- undocked.

- de DB2OS @ DB0FAU.#NDS.DEU.EU to AMSAT @ WW Hi,
- in addition to the bulletin from DL1GBM I would like to clarify,
- that although AMSAT is not directly interested in manned Space
- Activities, this does not mean that AMSAT is not supporting
- such Projects. In US the SPACE SHUTTLE SAREX activity receives
- a lot of support from ARRL, NASA Groups and AMSAT-NA. The same for
- other AMSAT organizations too. We support MIR and SAREX activities
- where we can, but the main interest is indeed concentrating
- on building and launching Amateur Radio Satellites.
- On the other hand, the Amateur Radio Traffic on-board MIR and the
- Space Shuttle gave a lot of very good publicity for Ham Radio
- during different Media activities. This helps Amateur Radio in many ways.
- During the international Satellite Colloquium hosted by AMSAT-UK
- at the University of Surrey, this topic was also discussed several
- times. However, during last years satellite meeting it was made clear
- by the majority of the attending satellite groups, that it is not
- in the interest and responsibility of the AMSAT and IARU Satellite
- Coordinator to coordinate MIR amateur radio traffic within (or even
- outside) of the amateur satellite band.
- It was also made clear that the FM simplex traffic is not compatible
- with the weak signal satellite operations. Problems will not only
- caused by the MIR station, but rather due to un-coordinated traffic
- from terrestrial users trying to call the MIR station.
- In many cases such stations used a huge amount of uplink power,
- or continously called through times when the MIR was not QRV or even not
- in range! This would be indeed very harmfull and not acceptable.
- However, several ideas are in discussion now, as the 145.550 Simplex
- frequency is getting nearly totally unusable over Europe.
- One suggestion I made to Leo, UA3CR is to use the 145.800 MHz frequency
- with -600 KHz shift in SPLIT Frequency. Thus, the 145.800 MHz will *only*
- be used for as a DOWNLINK and the 145.200 MHz *only* for UPLINK.
- In principle this should help to reduce the amount of interferences
- on both sides. The ex-R8 channel is no more in use by FM-Repeaters
- according to IARU regulations, because it is part of the Amateur
- Satellite band. Interference into the satellite band during the few
- short passes during the day should however not make too much difficulties.
- This possibility was also recently discussed within AMSAT and IARU groups
- and it looks like that this might be a compromise with which everyone
- could live. 73s Peter, DB2OS

- "MIR" QRG Problem
-
- ( new version! sorry 144.675 is wrong, read 144.475 ! )
-
- The problem of using the frequency of 145.550 MHz by the space
- station "MIR" has been widely discussed by the AMSAT groups of
- late. The problem is that this frequency is in the portion of
- simplex communications between ground VHF FM stations and in some
- regions especially in Europe this band is filled with
- interferences. By this reason the work of the European
- radioamateurs with the cosmonauts is practically impossible and
- this situation is growing worse with every day. The cosmonauts
- also complain of the heavy interferences. In order to avoid them
- and to make the necessary links the cosmonauts sometimes have to
- change the frequency by an agreement with the correspondents. The
- transition to the portion of the satellite communications 145.800 -
- 146.000 MHz evoke unfavourable criticism by the AMSAT enthusiasts
- as "MIR" and its correspondents themselves creat heavy
- interferences to weak signals of many satellites working legally
- in this sector.
-
- The discussion of that problem has found its reflection at the
- 9-th AMSAT Conference of 1994. Don, G3BGM, expressed the views of
- some of the satellite communications enthusiasts and offered to
- take into consideration the frequency 144.475 that the cosmonauts
- used sometime for their private contacts. This frequency is at the
- end of the SSB/CW sector and is not actually used. We have also
- discussed that problem with the Head of the Cosmonauts
- Radiotraining Group Mr. S. Samburov, RV3DR. We have got his
- preliminary consent. We would like to know other opinions
- concerning that matter, including the cosmonauts' opinion.

- de DL1GBM @ DB0CZ.#BW.DEU.EU to SAT @ WW Hello fellow hams,
-
- my first reaction on UA3CR-bulletin about 144.475Mhz as a new downlink QRG for
- the FM (F3E) ham radio traffic of MIR space station caused some mails to me.
- I think this topic is of general interest and concerns far more hams than these
- discussing now, so here we are in another bulletin.
-
- OE1WRS asked me for a traffic list on 144.475... well, some of my SSB QSOs indeed
- took place there. I especially appreciate (seldom) QSOs over a transponder in Berlin
- which has his (surely offically coordinated) SSB in/output on 144.475MHz!
- I will not list FM-QSOs of local stations disturbing my SSB skeds on this QRG....
- But I will and must refer to IARU bandplans. We have enough problems caused by
- violations of just this rules given by ourselves, the ham community. I beg all
- amateurs to respect bandplans. If You find it to be changed, take the way it has to
- go, change with the help of OeVSV,DARC,etc in the IARU - that is the way!
- (I would anyway beg OeVSV to stop OE7XZI FM input on 144.375MHz before getting
- started....)
- Remember: not hearing signals on 144.475 MHz or whereever in CW/SSB/BEACON/SAT parts
- does not mean that there is none. There might be weak sigs which are listened to
- with great engagements by other hams. (They might have the better receiver, hi)
-
- Thanks to DB2OS! Peter gave me a long and "AMSAT" statement in his mail.
- It was somewhat surprising.... Peter said to me that the MIR operation has
- nothing to do with AMSAT and that AMSAT does not want MIR to operate in the
- satellite part of the band (there is enough FM-QRM there!). I fully agree!
- I addressed my mail to SAT@AMSAT because UA3CR did so. There were no ather links
- to AMSAT in the bulletins, were there?
- There might me a compromise using the old repeater channel R8 (145.800/145.200MHz).
- Under the opinion that it is really difficult to find a QRG at all I would accept
- short time QRM on the sat beacons and on R7X repeaters.... It would be far better
- than intruding with FM in the SSB part!
- Ok, Peter, I will now let AMSAT out of the play.... I did not want to bring it
- into it, hi. This bulletin is addressed to SAT@WW....
-
- It was a pleasure for me to get a reaction from UA3CR himself. It was quite quick
- for that distance, so thanks Leo and all the SysOps in between!
- Leo, You asked for my suggestion and advice for Space Staion frequencies. Maybe
- I am not able to really advice. I do not know the bandplans in the other IARU regions.
- My view is "Europe based". I gave some suggestions already, maybe my mail to You
- did nott come through to Moscou. I proposed a downlink of 144.550 Mhz but did
- actually not think about the uplink, sorry!
-
- I hope that MIR will find the soloution which causes the mindest trouble possible
- and I want MIR to continue FM operation for shure, Leo! (Looking forward to QSO, hi)
- Maybe there is no word of Space Stations" in bandplans, maybe "space" does not
- belong to any IARU region (hihi), but the UFB QTH of mir causes a big responsibility
- of not "blindly transmitting somewhere"! I wanted to help to avoid unneccessary
- QRM. If MIR will not transmit in CW/SSB/BEACON/SAT parts of the 2m band, I will be
- happy - and surely not me alone....
-
- Thanks for reading. Comments to DL1GBM@DB0CZ.#BW.DEU.EU....
- 73s to all (Special greetings to Leo)
